Chapter 5: Flow Nets

Before we scare you away with the formula of the DCF-method, it is important to understand the underlying assumptions of this technique. Valuation on the basis of the DCF-method is based on two main assumptions. The valuation method is based on the future performance and the value of future earnings is worth less today than in the future. However, please note that using the DCF-method for startup valuation also comes with disadvantages, so don’t forget to check the ‘disadvantages of the Discounted Cash Flow method’ section at the end of this article.

Penetrometers (described in Section 3.7) are sometimes used to test the shear strength of the soil at the surface-lateral or vertical. Their use is primarily applicable to fine-grained soil; coarse and gravelly strata tend to give erroneous results. This reading represents the pressure in force per unit area necessary to push the penetrometer to the designated mark. This instrument is also frequently used as a guide for the bearing capacity of the soil. What is meant by flow net?

A flow net is a graphical representation of two-dimensional steady-state groundwater flow through aquifers. Construction of a flow net is often used for solving groundwater flow problems where the geometry makes analytical solutions impractical.

The higher the WACC percentage, the higher the risk and the lower the valuation of your firm. As investing in startups is risky to begin with, it is not strange to see high WACC percentages for such firms.

If the rock minerals are relatively soluble, slow water velocity and the ensuing long travel time result in a chemical equilibrium between the water and the rock medium. Caution must be exercised because the modulus of elasticity is not the same for decompression as for compression. Also, the hydrostatic head on the upstream side may vary with changes in topography (e.g., sedimentary deposits) and water elevation or pool level. The actual head at any time is the combination of pressure head and elevation head; the velocity head is inconsequential.

One may consult almost any manual on soil testing for a more detailed description of the test. Before and after the consolidation test begins, the water content and the weight of the sample are determined. It is with this in mind that the author has found the testing of samples cut from Shelby tubes, tested in the cut section of the tube, a most desirable approach. Here the Shelby tube is cut to a desired length with a clay sample inside it.
